Employee Recognition Programs

Appreciation Awards (on the spot or spot awards) which are delivered at the time of achievement.  This recognition should be relatively small and can be given to individuals, teams, or work groups.  They may come in the form of thank you notes, candy, flowers, etc. These awards should be tied to a specific message of recognition or measurable goal, achievement or contribution. 

The types of contributions that might be recognized through appreciation awards are:

  • staying late to help someone prepare a presentation for the next day
  • volunteering to cover for a co-worker who is out sick
  • going out of your way to help boost morale or create a positive, inclusive work environment
  • exceeding expectations for a goal or milestone in a long-term collaborative project

     

    Extra Mile Award

    These awards are intended to support the objectives and strategic goals of each business unit in your company.  They are given to teams and individuals for significant accomplishments in their departments in which they collaborate. Criteria for receiving the awards are determined locally and are frequently grouped into different award categories.

    Excellence Award

    This type of award rewards extraordinary efforts made by members of your organization based on fulfilling the goals, values, and missions your company.  This is among the highest award given to staff. Professionalism, commitment to best practices, and high standards of excellence are at the heart of these awards.  Both teams and individuals are eligible to be nominated for any of the award categories.  Subcontractors, consultants, outsourced, and temporary employees are not eligible for the cash award.

Other recognition ideas

  • Invite employees to attend a meeting in your place when you are not available.

  • Have coffee with an employee that you normally do not see.

  • Ask an employee to serve as a mentor to a new employee.

  • Allow an employee to gain additional knowledge and skills by cross-training with another team member.

  • Encourage employees to share best practices at the beginning of a department meeting.

  • Award employees a day off.

  • Invite an employee to plan and run a meeting.

  • Place a bulletin-board in your department to place thank you cards, letters, pictures, etc. that recognize employees.

  • Annual retreat (off-site) to celebrate this year’s accomplishment and to plan for the following year.

  • Provide a comfortable break area for employees to enjoy themselves.
